Herbs For the Common Cold

For teas, the rule of thumb is, one teaspoon of herb per cup of boiling water unless otherwise noted.

Unless otherwise noted, steep leaves 5 to 10 minutes in a covered container, twigs, bark and roots, steep 10 to 15 minutes (covered).

Anise/Licorice - for coughs - contains mucilage - soothes mucous membranes use in a tea

Boneset - given the name because it cured "break bone fever" aka pleurisy (reputed to assist inducing sweat and therefore reducing fever)

Chamomile - before bed... sleep, sore throat.. and steam is good for nasal passages too (note it is also an anti-inflammatory)

Coltsfoot - (either leaves or blossoms) in a HOT tea (mucilage is the active ingredient.. not do not use this a LOT... some question as to it being linked to cancer... note also Native Americans used it in smoke mixtures for cough and asthma)
Comfrey - tea to ease bronchitis... not to be taken for long periods of time

Echinacea - roots (tincture every 2 hours was the old way... now there are herbal pills which is good... this is NOT a tasty herb... ) stimulates the immune system... somewhat of an antiseptic... fresh leaves if chewed are numbing to the mouth... also helps induce sweating...

Elder (blossoms or berries in Tea) - mainly for its expectorant properties, also known to help induce sweating and is mildly diuretic.

Eucalyptus - Tea: use leaves [antiseptic as well as relieving congestion] , bath: mix with thyme, rub...

Feverfew- member of the chrysanthemum family - use leaves in tea to reduce fever (note the flowers are used to induce menstrual flow... if pregnant.. do not use this plant)

Ginger Root - for laryngitis - use 1 tsp. shredded root per cup of water, bring to a simmer and let stand for 15 minutes. The leaves of this plant are generally used as a tonic, and is high in minerals such as Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Vitamin C, D, E, K and the B vitamins.

Horehound - expectorant also mildly sedative... LOL quite frankly... the candies make a good cough drop if you don't mind the taste (or put one of the candies in a cup of one of the other herb teas)

Pansy (whole herb... contains saponins, flavenoids and salicylic compounds [think aspirin]) Mildly expectorant and fever reducing

Sage (also helps lower fever besides soothing the throat) and Marjoram are good for sore throats... use in soup.. or boil and make a mouthwash/gargle...

Thyme - tea for coughs (antispasmodic/antitussive and somewhat of an expectorant)

White Willow - (Used as a tea, natural salicin, i.e., think aspirin - fever reduction, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic- use sparingly though - this is rough on the stomach)

Yarrow - in tea - reduces fever

For inhalation of steam: mix eucalyptus, thyme, scotch pine and chamomile
