Herbs For Digestion

Any of the following can be taken as a capsule or in a tea... in tea, the rule of thumb is a teaspoon of herb per cup of boiling water, steeped in a covered cup for 5 to 15 minutes.

The more scent to the herb, the shorter the steeping time need be. (Think of it that the stronger scented herbs have more volatile essential oil).

Anise

For flatulence (i.e. gas) - crush seeds (1 to 2 teaspoons), pour a cup of boiling water over the seeds, let stand 5 to 10 minutes, twice a day before meals (antiflatulance teas work best if taken before the meal)

Balm

Good for indigestion 2 to 3 tsp of the leaves in boiling water.. let steep 15 minutes (twice a day)

Caraway

For flatulence - crush seeds (1 teaspoon), pour a cup of boiling water over the seeds, let stand 5 to 10 minutes, twice a day before meals (antiflatulance teas work best if taken before the meal)

Basil

For nausea, use a tsp of the herb, steep covered in a cup of boiling water

Bergamot

For upset stomach, nausea and vomiting - 1 tsp herb per cup of boiling water steeped 15 minutes.

Catnip

For upset stomach - 1 teaspoon herb per cup of boiling water, drink once cool (if taken hot, some people find it an emetic, i.e., it can cause some folks to vomit if taken hot). Best taken before sleeping, as it also has a sedative quality to it.

Chamomile

For indigestion and stomach cramps - teaspoon of flowers in a cup of boiling water, steep it covered

Dandelion

For appetite loss 1 to 2 tsp dried leaves or root in a cup of boiling water.. can be mixed with peppermint and/or roman chamomile

Dill

For flatulence - crush seeds (1 to 2 teaspoons), pour a cup of boiling water over the seeds, let stand 5 to 10 minutes, twice a day before meals

Fennel

Good for indigestion and gas... in a tea, crush 1 tsp of the seeds, steep for 15 minutes, drink 1 cup of this tea hot, up to 3 times daily (pretty good tasting too, add honey) note: some folks make a mixture of caraway, fennel and peppermint for a digestive tea...

Licorice Root

Tea, 1 oz per cup of boiling water, steep a minimum of 10 minutes. (good also in combination with peppermint)

Peppermint

Good for indigestion ... in a tea 2 to 3 tsp leaves, to one cup boiling water.. let steep 10 minutes, covered... up to 3 times daily, best after the meals

Savory

In a tea to ease cramps from indigestion, 1 tsp dried herb per cup of boiling water, steep covered for 10 minutes, sweeten with honey, drink warm or lukewarm.

Thyme

For indigestion 1 tsp of herb steeped for 10 minutes covered to make a tea.

Wormwood

For indigestion (not for prolonged use, max one cup)... 1 tsp herb to one cup boiling water.. steeped covered for 10 minutes.. take after the meal

Yarrow

For indigestion... pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 - 2 tsp of the leaves and flowers... steep for 10 minutes covered, take 1 cup 2 -3 times a day after meals.
